i know, i know. i sound like such a hater. theres never been a franchise better at mechanical mastery than star wars. but battlefront ii really takes things too far. for example, battlefront 2s progression system is designed to be easier to manage than destiny with fewer bells and whistles but by the same token, dice has done nothing to make the experience easier or more palatable. seriously, there are six ways to spend the most valuable currency in the game. its a black hole and theres no way out. theres no star wars game in history thats built a system around the simple premise of gaining hundreds of thousands of credits without actually helping anyone. dice gave us a bunch of ill-fitting gunner classes, and now all we have to do is pay good money to make more (better) of them. theres no other way around this. this is a game you play to get credits and spend them. star wars doesnt make money of you and its not fun to play. for the past several years, dice has done pretty well at copying star wars for them. its nothing new, but theres no question that theyve done it well. the sad fact is that battlefront ii is perhaps the most openly star wars-themed video game ever made.

if youve been reading the headlines, you know the big story. dice are planning to send all of star wars canon to the dustbin in order to keep the game in line with the movies: han isnt a corellian, leia isnt a princess, and wedge isnt a rebel pilot. if you want to make a star wars: battlefront sequel that is not a botched sequel to star wars: battlefronts rather mediocre campaign, you are free to do so. unfortunately, you arent really making an authentic star wars game in the process, and for one, i dont think anyone wanted you to. it looks like the dialogue is going to be lifted entirely from the films, and that bears all sorts of problems.

the campaign starts with a young jawa named garris recovering an ancient weapon known as the infiltrator, which can give you temporary advantages in battle by bypassing enemy shields and walls. you go under the radar until it malfunctions and you crash-land on scarif – with several other pirates in tow. when you wake up, all of the pirates are being interrogated by special agents of the first order who are trying to identify them.
even if battlefront iiwerent one of those games that demands to be played with at least six friends, this ending wouldnt have made any sense. most of the in-game world is empty. every mission, except for the last two, has an objective with no clear objective. and there are no details about this missing mission and the new characters being introduced with it. it is always best to leave games with plenty of mystery, but the ending of star wars battlefront ii pretty much asks for you to be told youre missing out on something.
for example, im still trying to figure out why i was putting together a light saber-slinging team when i picked up this content, or why my grandfather, a hardened imperial sympathizer and clone wars veteran, would have fallen in with these rogue characters. my grandfather deserves better.
if the game isnt bad enough, it doesnt even come with the mission creator (aka star wars battlefront 2s version of the swtor level editor). trying to track down the creator on the game companys web site is a pain-in-the-ass process. otherwise, this would have been an interesting place to spend some time with your friends. its sad to see more content left out of this package.
