this is the second single from cocteau twins’ victorialand and was released in 1996. it’s become an important part of the live set for the band and was given a 4ad release to mark its 10th anniversary. here it is in all its silent glory. the album featured several top level guest musicians, one of them, bjorn thorsson, performed with her on the release of this single.
songs such as lorelei have been part of 4ad’s regular catalogue since the band’s inception. here some of the band’s early pieces, including their first international hit single, are reissued for the first time on cd. the vast re-mastered catalogue includes an album of remixes and the long out-of-print a love bias, which was originally released as part of a charity compilation.
isolation is considered one of cocteau twins most groundbreaking recordings. it’s not only their first lp, but the records debut single. it took a while for the band to fit into the mantle of rock’s most dominant genre but by the time 1989’s european winter came around, the twins were there and jamming. it may be the sound of two english women in a room by themselves but it sounds like something more. the music stuck. it still sticks. but now it sticks via the hands of electronic wizards.
since their early days, the cocteaus were known for their eclecticism and, by the late ’80s, the band was working with producers such as the rentals, spencer clarke and many others. the kala single from telestrasze is a good example of the band’s increasing commerciality as well as its continued commitment to their wordy mysticism. kala is what we call an eastern theosophical concept. in our textbook, it’s a synthesis of raga (indian music) and free jazz. it’s part of the ‘alchemical’ philosophy of the kabbalah. and we are using this as a cohesive element in our music.
the cocteau twins the shooping of lulu belle is a 10 track mini album released in the uk in 1995. the record was originally released in 1992 in the uk on 2-track cassette in support of their 1993 album gish. the record was re-released on cd in 1993 with the addition of the “homo domesticus” cover and “banks of it” by wire. “underwater” was originally released as a limited edition single to promote the album gish (mute, 1993).
what if the perfect album was released in 1992, and was never really issued? cocteau twins’ whitethorn is the closest we have to that. it was self-produced, and it was done in a very minimal fashion, with no real production values. it’s a risk, but the gamble paid off. it’s hard to imagine anyone making a more focused album in the ’90s, except maybe twin peaks. it’s a near-perfect meditation on ’70s and ’80s british pop, with the special hook of being recorded in a closed room — the sound is hypnotic, as if it was a ritual performed by the band. even if the songs don’t stand up to repeated listenings, it’s worth the trip.
liz fraser was the one who persuaded the cocteau twins to put out the cocteau twins singles collection. it’s a box set that combines her own side projects, liz fraser, sunset rubdown, and glory box, with singles from the twins and other projects, in a chronological format. (she also remastered the original cocteau twins catalogue for it.) i’m not sure it’s necessary, but it’s fun to see the different facets of the band, and to hear them in different configurations. it’s also worth checking out, as it’s got some of the best stuff from each of the side projects.
