the study had several limitations. first of all, the diagnoses were based on the diagnostic interview according to dsm-iv. however, interrater reliability was fair to good, and the agreement with the diagnostic classification by the consultant psychiatrist was very good. furthermore, the study lacked a comparison group with general psychiatric outpatients. a further limitation was that the neuropsychological battery was not validated for the german language. however, the test results are in line with those of several other studies and the overall pattern of results is similar to previous studies in schizophrenia and mood disorder. the self-report questionnaires were administered by trained psychologists. there was no documentation of any psychotherapeutic interventions provided to the patients. that the programmes were, according to the criteria of the groups, comparable to those of other studies is self-evident and the patients were compared to a group with depressed patients. the groups were designed as a function of the needs of the acute psychiatry, and this has to be seen in the context of the time of the study. the results of this study found differences in neuropsychological functioning between patients with depression and patients with schizophrenia in the post-acute stage of their illness. similar differences have been reported in several previous studies. in spite of comparable total scores in bprs-r and gaf, patients with post-acute depression show significantly better results in several cognitive assessments (verbal memory and fluency, visual-motor concentration, information processing in visual-verbal areas and selective attention) compared to their counterparts. special attention should be paid to the following result: patients with depression were significantly older and had a significantly higher number of hospitalizations. these aspects might indicate a more severe course of the illness and hint at worse performing in neuropsychological functioning. however, there were no significant differences in other cognitive variables such as verbal comprehensiveness, reasoning, spatial perception and visual abstract processing, cognitive processing, and abstract cognitive reasoning.
