Carter Burwell completed the score with roughly 6 weeks of post-production time. A recording date had been set for after the Cannes Film Festival, but it was apparently pushed to after the Toronto Film Festival.
Well, I got the script in slightly early. It was May before we started, two days before I started to score the movie. I began the process of scoring before the movie finished — before we had a moment of silence at the end. It was just a brutal experience. I was in a sound stage in Los Angeles, in a basement in Studio City.
We were throwing music all over the place until the script was done. Stages of a film — the first draft, the breakdown — are one thing, but the thing that makes or breaks a film is your score. If it comes at the end, you have nothing. If it comes at the beginning, you have some work to do. It’s painful, but ultimately I think it’s important for the scores to come in early, because approximately 40 percent of a film’s work is done by trailers, press, and book publicity. You can’t script those in advance. Film is sprint, not a marathon.
The film was in the studio for 17 days. I never saw the film. I’m not the director: I write the music. I think we were obviously getting in the spirit of the film. There was a social sensibility and there was a dark sensibility. We ended up having a 30-piece orchestra. We had a 15-piece orchestra, which was like background music. We had an 8-piece brass section. There was a harp. There was a violin. There was an assortment of woodwinds, percussion.
