Stanoje Stanojevic Istorija Srpskog Naroda 11.pdf

From the very early days, he was a passionate defender of the rights and culture of the Serbs of the Balkan Peninsula. In 1898, he became a professor at Belgrade University, where in 1923, he had a new lecture hall named after him. His lectures focused on the history of Serbian language and literature, and on the history of the Serbian people. He received a significant number of awards, and a portrait of him was placed in every high school in Serbia.

In virtually the same period, he was working to mobilise support for Serbia’s war of independence from the Turks, as the failure to do so had led to the modern tragedy of the First Balkan War and others. The outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877/1878 was a major spur to that objective, as Ottoman forces had attacked Serbia. Once the Turks could be forced to retreat, the modern history of Serbia could begin. The Serbs then advanced into Macedonia and occupied the city of Pleva (28 July 1877), which boosted the morale of the Serbian army. The end of that period saw the Ottoman army push through the far southeast into Thrace and Anatolia to a point just east of Ouchak, where the Battle of Ouchak was fought (1 November 1877). The Turks, however, had been exhausted by the fighting, and the forces of the Sultan had to halt. The Serbian army had reached the heights of the Budimpe/Profanga and the Balkan Mountains. A flag of truce was, however, sent by the Turks to the Serbs to discuss land for the Ottomans to resettle there, and the Serbs withdrew from the highlands. Tsar Milan and his government were very reluctant, as the army was greatly weakened by the fighting, and would not be able to withstand a Turkish invasion. The time of peace, however, was over. Yugoslavia had also been defeated in the First Balkan War, and Serbia was exhausted. Therefore, when the Ottoman Empire officially declared war on Serbia, the Serbian army was not strong enough to defeat the Turks, and they were no longer able to resist a Turkish invasion. Serbia was split into two, and the Turks moved inland to the area of Serbia which is now known as Macedonia.
