In this study, we surveyed the orthopaedic surgeons of Miyagi Prefecture and compared the responses with those of the orthopaedic surgeons of Hiroshima Prefecture, who did not receive any dispatch operations from the disaster site. Questionnaires regarding the professional activities and the perceived impact of the disaster were sent to all Miyagi orthopaedic surgeons. The results were compared with those from a questionnaire survey of orthopaedic surgeons from Hiroshima Prefecture. A total of 473 orthopaedic surgeons, including 453 from Miyagi Prefecture and 20 from Hiroshima Prefecture, completed the questionnaires. The response rate was 95.5% from Miyagi Prefecture and 100% from Hiroshima Prefecture. Although there was no significant difference between the perceived impact of the disaster on their clinical practice and their perceived impact on their subspecialties, Miyagi orthopaedic surgeons were more likely to be performing non-prescription services than Hiroshima orthopaedic surgeons (p = 0.019). Sixty-nine percent of the Miyagi orthopaedic surgeons and 60% of the Hiroshima orthopaedic surgeons did not provide medical services to the disaster affected areas. The majority of the Miyagi orthopaedic surgeons, as well as the majority of the Hiroshima orthopaedic surgeons, were able to perform their full range of orthopaedic services.
