each of the first three golden axe arcade games were released for the sega genesis in 1989 and 1990. the third game was the most successful of the series, and the one which established the series most firmly in the arcade scene. the game was ported to the sega mega drive in 1990, the sega master system in 1991, and the sega game gear in 1992. the sega genesis version was the only to make use of the second player attachment, which allowed up to two players to play the game, and was also the only version to feature a password function. the mega drive version was the only to feature the original, shorter soundtrack, while the game gear version was the only to feature the sega beer barn, with its stock of very, very strong beer. the mega drive version also features the original intro song “gold axe” by yuzo koshiro, and the game gear version features “blast off” by aphex twin. the playstation port is the only version to feature the “another world” intro song, as well as the “endless cyclone” battle theme. the dreamcast port is the only version to feature the in-game movies, “battle of the warriors” and “battle of the knights”.
the game features three modes of gameplay: story, tournament and free-style. in the story mode you play alex lario, a young swordsman and the leader of the town’s “axe gang”. you fight your way through levels in which you defeat enemies and collect health and power-ups. the game is timed, and the player must complete each level before time runs out. the levels are divided into four sections, with four trials for each. the trial mode is the tournament mode. it consists of a single-player career mode, where you can select any of the three characters, and a 2-player co-op mode.
overall, the game retains the original gameplay that made the first game so popular. the graphics aren’t as good as the original, but they still look a bit better than most current games. it includes the same weapons, enemies, and gameplay as the original, but it’s still a solid game and it’s one of the best 3d games ever made.
there are two different modes of play and one of them is surprisingly fun. to play as the barbarian class, simply enter the local password at the title screen and select the barber class. each of the four characters (yes, all four of them) has its own special barbershop power. one of these, called the “golden axe” attack, actually turns every enemy in the game into a golden statue for a few seconds. it makes for an amazing endgame maneuver that you can only pull off in the last level of the game, making the challenge even higher than it usually is.
the original arcade game only had a point-and-click interface, but in the home ports you can play with your keyboard. (mouse support is also available in the mouse and keyboard version.) the fact that these three games are tied together also means that one of the games is always being played during the other two (the first part of the game is finished before the rest of the game begins). this means that you can always learn the shortcuts for the computer and play it for free. the only exception is in versus mode, where you must use the keyboard and mouse or special controller.
when the game is finished, you’ll be able to access a bonus game called “golden axe tournament mode.” this allows you to play a variety of games against other players online, including a version of the first two games, an original arcade game, and versions of the two bonus games from the collection.
