Firstly, we will start with our game configuration. This configuration features a Samsung G7’s 27″ 3840×2160 display. This display features 4K resolution and a 60Hz refresh rate. The Samsung G7 is excellent in 4K resolution and high refresh rate display screens. It offers peak brightness of 303 nits, 99% DCI-P3 color gamut, 8-millimeter bezels, support for HDR, and input lag of less than 10 milliseconds. The G7 is a great display for gaming. It has a strong response time of only 2ms and low input lag. We tested at 100% brightness with the game and our viewing distance was 15 feet.
Our next display configuration was on a 32″ BenQ XL2420Z which features a 240Hz refresh rate. This is a peak of 144Hz in 4K. It is a good display, but not quite on par with the G7. It has a peak brightness of 298 nits, 99% DCI-P3 color gamut, 8-millimeter bezels, support for HDR, and input lag of less than 10 milliseconds. This display is great for the price. The BenQ XL2420Z is one of the best displays at the $179 price point. We tested at 100% brightness with the game and our viewing distance was 15 feet.
As might be expected from the game’s early marketing, the PS4 God of War game had a lot of problems. The controller sticks horribly at times, and with the game’s poor anti-ghosting support, inputs frequently get lost, with a mouse or gamepad needed to input commands. This problem persisted on the PS4 Pro, too, and the PC version suffers from the same problems. With a bit of work, however, the game works acceptably well in PC games, thanks to that computer’s capability to handle high-quality control inputs.
Kratos can, for the first time, look up and down, though you can only use this view if you are on horseback or riding a chariot. The new camera can be panned freely using the left analog stick, but on stationary platforms, it can be zoomed in and out with the right analog stick. This is very useful for peeking around corners, or in this case, avoiding problems. If an enemy is headed your way, you can always zoom in to attack it. This is the main improvement over the PS4 game, since often Kratos was in an awkward position where he could not easily see ahead or to the sides.
The game’s controls and physics are quite good, except that often Kratos’ attacks do not hit their intended targets. When enemies vanish, they disappear after a fixed amount of time. Sometimes the attacks hit and other times the projectiles disappear with a welp .
The game has a generally quite colorful look, but the overall color palette is fairly limited, and one of the few issues to pop up is that the textures look a bit inconsistent. Objects tend to appear with a bit of dirt or dust on them, the fire and water effects are noticeable “holes” in some of the textures, and the character models and textures are generally a bit low resolution. There are some detailed areas, of course, such as the city of Athens, a beach scene, a battle on top of a mountain, but most of the environments are simply drab and lack character.
