I am willing to bet that you are correct about the state of mind influencing the change in music. Its kind of strange that the past was so devoid of hate or war or violence but in this day and age, the youth is not immune to it. I think it affects the generation in many ways. We always hear about violence and gangsta rappers but we never hear about peace. Music at times can be used as a healing medium. I think its a delicate balance to keep the power of it while not conforming to the negative connotation the media gives it. Music is one of the true arts of our time. And its a shame that music is becoming commercialized but in a sense, its kind of true.

Fuck the screaming idiots, Im thankful I have found music, and Im grateful for the bands that make music. Its a lot easier to be a musician now than it was in the 80s and 90s. The bullshit has been taken out of it. There were so many shitty bands in the 80s, and today its hard to find bands like that. You will see that all the screamo kids come out of the woodwork when its the time of a big release like Nevermind or Nevermind. Now look at the world. Did you notice that when Nirvana broke up, people who always said that grunge was better than heavy metal suddenly became metal fans and started listening to metal? Why is that? I know why. Because grunge made them popular. But thats just a side effect of how music effects society, not the other way around.

I also agree with sukima, music is a good thing for people. It is my favorite way to enjoy life, being a guitar player and a music teacher I’ve seen first hand how music helps children deal with and “cope” with daily changes, and that is a great thing.

I think your on the money. I agree with you, it sucks that radio stations put out such a wide variety of music, therefore no one gets to listen to what they really want. That is one of my biggest problems with radio stations. And what is the point of putting out the same old stuff over and over again? I used to listen to Sirius Radio a lot, because of the point that it plays music not heard anywhere else, but i dont even listen to them anymore. Now they play stuff like Nickleback and 3 Doors Down all the time, and now i cant even listen to that crap because i cant stand to hear it. And what about the ones who dont want to listen to music because they cant understand it? Thats why i prefer to listen to music with lyrics rather than just instrumental music. It also helps that i play the piano, and you cant tell me that piano music doesnt have lyrics. So i listen to tracks like Bring Me To Life by Alanis Morisette or Eye Of The Tiger by Survivor (of course, with the chorus and beat to the song), along with songs like this.
I understand where you’re coming from there, but personally, I dont think its a new phenomena, or something uniquely american. I used to have a lot of friends who were all into music. I was at a Party about a year ago, and I asked my friend who had made me aware of a band that i really like, Id heard of them before, and he told me that its a great band. I hadnt listened to it before, but I do now, and It reminds me of the amazing music that my Mom used to listen to me all the time. It makes me feel so good listening to their music. I can understand why you might get bored and not like the current music though. But, I think it has to do with the fact that you just want some original music. I personally really love backin music, and I dont like the current mainstream music. I am more of an indie music person. I am a big fan of The Beatles, I love Aerosmith, and other bands that are a little more underground. I also like to listen to some Classic Rock. In my opinion, everything else is just Hip Hop, Rap, Indie, Indie Pop, Indie Rock, Pop, House. etc,etc. There is no real Alternative. I like Original. I dont know how to explain it, I just like good music that is not widely available. I used to listen to all the songs that i listened to on my Mom, and I remember liking them back then. I guess what I am trying to say here is that music changes, and if you dont like it, than thats your opinion. Just like everyone is entitled to have their own opinion.
