theres a slow build on the chorus and the instrumental leave you wanting more. the song takes on a different feel, though, when trey switches to the second verse. the lyrics begin with the lines, when i get home to my babies and theyre all going to be grown / theyre gonna be waitin’, i’m about to show ’em what the hell i can do, and theyre gonna wanna believe me. the r&b comes out, with the instrumental playing a role in its composition. its a welcome change of pace, and trey seems to be having fun with the personality he brings to the song. he sounds excited about his future and what he can offer his family in the music he makes.
songs are like anyone else, he says, they do what they want. sometimes, they can be perfect for their environment but that doesnt mean theyll be perfect for everyone else. the hook on behind the back is a great addition to the overall vibe of the album, and the song can easily be heard as a contrast to the previous outing. songz serves as the primary vocalist on the track, and the added instrumentation helps round out the song and his performance. behind the back is a welcome ode to his fans, and the final verse is full of gratitude and respect.
my man, now i just want to go back, back to that place, back to the time, we were just talkin’ about our future. in the first half of the song, all of the other players are laid out in front of him. the girls are watching from afar, keeping a steady distance, while he looks to move on from the past and live in the present. when the chorus kicks in, the music kicks up a notch. and the beat is just explosive. its like everything in his life is exploding into a massive crescendo of fiery emotion. the use of an orchestra, just as the song was about to begin, is a surreal yet brilliant way to end the song and the album. trey closes out by thanking his fans and the spirit that guides him.
The title track is on this album is a complete turnaround from the rest of the LP, but it still paves the way for his eventual successful comeback. Trey glides to the mid-tempo groove of the song, drawing us in with a personal story of a romantic proposal gone awry. He says he loves her, but he’ll keep his feelings to himself, making for a powerful track.
Ending the album is the excellent, These Girls, a club banger with a strong beat and a seductively sensual groove. Trey paints a picture of a happy couple, concluding with a passionate ode to him and his lady. After hearing this song, you’ll be turning up the volume in anticipation of hearing the rest of the album.
This album is a darkhorse of a contender for album of the year and we’re honored to have ranked it #2 out of the ten albums on this list. Trey Songz as a rapper isn’t something new for hip-hop music, but his soothing vocals and surprisingly thought-provoking lyrics make him a favorite here in our household. His sincerity, humor, and radio-friendly production make him a viable R&B singer that you can dance too.
The addition of a guitarist is something that’s added a new depth to the album. His guitar-driven sound completely different than his drum-heavy songs and the style continues to grow as he keeps releasing new music. Trey Songz’s covers and special appearances are sprinkled throughout the album, reinforcing his musical growth from the label formerly known as an R&B label to the current blueprint. His efforts are definitely commendable and we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention we’re looking forward to whatever he does next.
