a few weeks later mr. jerry noticed me walking down liberty street again and approached me, once again with a set of drums in the store window. i was about to explain to him about my father’s enticement when he stopped me and pointed to the price tag on the drums. that was the exact price that i paid for my first set of drums. i guess we reached an accord but i never bought another set and i never saw mr. jerry after that. in later years, i always wondered if he felt guilty for using my enticement because of the $100 i was allowed to borrow.

after the banks, pawn shops and record stores, i also stumbled upon a place called a the bottom dollar record store. it was owned by a very nice and very rich man. he bought and sold records at bargain prices and had the entire business of handling and storing records. he had a big area in his warehouse where i sometimes took a bus to go and ride his stationary bus around that warehouse and listen to the records that he had on display. one day i saw a record that i really wanted but it was really expensive. i had never played the record and i had no idea if i was even allowed to buy it. there was a “no sale” sign on the record so i didn’t try and get it. it was the first time i didn’t try and get it but every time i would pass by the store i would see that record. i thought about it several times and told my father that i would just have to work a little harder and bring in a little more money so i could buy the record. that was a great record but it was a bad record to test my patience. there would come a time when i would be a little older that i could try to buy the record after we would save up the money but that would be a few years later.

in my senior year of high school, i started playing the oboe for the high school band. at the time it was a little unusual to do so but i was told that the music director had plans for me to be the principal oboe soloist. a little bit later the music director offered me a full ride to go to college to study music. i was ecstatic and proud that he chose me as the principal oboe soloist for the district for five consecutive years. that same year, a little over a year after i started playing the oboe, i was playing with a cool band called iron butterfly. it was a very fast paced ensemble and the music director saw something in me. when i heard the music director tell me that i was to play with iron butterfly i knew that the time was right for me to buy my first set of drums.
when i reached the age of 18 and purchased my first set of drums (three drums, cymbals and a high hat) and a set of sticks, i realized that i didn’t have a snare drum. i tried looking around for a used set but i realized that i needed a stand for them and i didn’t have a way to secure my set of drums to my ride. as fate would have it, i would find a way.
can anyone remember where led zeppelin played the first gig after jimmy page purchased the rights to their music? the small hall where they played was called “johnny hamp’s strip joint”. there was no club named either. it was a strip joint. they played there the first sunday of every month. jimmy put a rug on the table and an old rug on the floor. the stage was built high enough so a piano would fit on stage but not so high that the harp could see the stage. on christmas day of 1964 they played for three months without a break. that’s dedication. in 1971 zeppelin became the biggest act in the world without ever having a #1 hit record. they were led by page and robert plant. for the guitarists in the audience, there was no “houses of the holy” or “kashmir”. there was “achilles last stand”.
