Chris Pegg, one of the Microsoft defect researchers who worked on the Windows XP patch for WGA, told The Register that the new anti-counterfeiting technology isn’t guaranteed to help. It’s based on two components – the operating system and a hardware test. The first, called verified boot, is for devices that use removable media and need to be validated before use. The second test, called ActiveX, is supposed to detect hacked BIOSes that aren’t on Microsoft’s approved list of BIOSes.
Weighing in on the issue yesterday, Alex Kochis reiterated that Microsoft would like to see more attention paid to hacking, rather than less. However, we don’t intend to make it easier for folks to hack. Instead, our focus is disrupting the “botnets and other organized crime” behind the proliferation of OEM-made BIOS pirate chips. If you take it easy to develop a BIOS hack, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to profit from it.
The Register has published a number of stories on the hacking of USB flash drives, finding that many of them aren’t truly random and manufactured to be easily cloneable and cheap to produce. Interestingly, the BIOS-accessing USB devices are so easy to modify that it’s more likely that people modify them to protect against cloning than to modify them for other purposes.
As for the problem of BIOS-equipped PCs still being around, he said that it’s also possible they could be on the market for a while longer. Unlike the rest of the PC, they could be upgraded without being entirely replaced. While systems that use this older model are still capable of running Windows Vista, the operating system won’t recognize the BIOS, and it won’t be able to upgrade the hard drive. According to Carino, Microsoft is working on the requirements needed to update these systems, but it’s hard to judge how quickly the technology will arrive. Microsoft has been very open about its development process, but the effort could drag on for a long time.
