OT703 THE TEXTUAL BASIS OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL
Upon completion of OT 510 a student is eligible to enroll in OT703, the seminar on the textual basis of the Children of Israel. Topics include: the Septuagint, the Masoretic text, the secondary traditions, the history of interpretation, and Hebrew texts in the ancient world. Prerequisite: OT510
OT 705 THE TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF THE EXODUS
There are certain texts that, in the opinion of some scholars, are not in the original Hebrew. The subject of Exodus (OT 705) is an important example of that. What is an ancient manuscript and what is it worth? That can only be answered through a careful analysis of the text and its context. Our course will address questions of the importance of text and other ancient texts. We will also study methods of analysis and comparison, and the history of textual criticism. The reader is required to do a portion of the work for the course, but it is not sufficient to do the hard work. You must create a plan to achieve your goal of having a sound understanding of Exodus.
The heart of the book of Hebrews is the sufficiency of Jesus and the assurance he gives to us of the inheritance he has prepared for us in his death. The author offers a warning that the early church in its ignorance of Christ may be tempted to pervert the truths of Jesus life and thought into a set of beliefs about God that are similar to the old pagan religions. The author calls the Christian to steadfastly focus on the person and work of Jesus and their spiritual experiences with him as the foundation for living now and for our heavenly enjoyment later. The author provides a powerful argument for living and dying by faith with the hope of the final glorious resurrection. Classes will examine the book to help participants resolve their personal questions about its difficulties and achieve a better understanding of the author. Prerequisite: NT513 or consent of the instructor. 2 credits.
