i love this movie. it was one of the best films ever made. but the colour is terrible. the soundtrack is horrible. its so loud. the soundtrack is all over the place. i mean, it was almost like a blaxploitation movie. the soundtrack was off in the corner. it must have been because it was a 70’s movie that they chose to have the soundtrack that way.
the much bigger point cameron and fox were making at the time – and still might – is that perhaps this film was not going to be released on blu-ray. it would have probably been a better move for all concerned had they just given it some time and budget to rest assured that it would eventually get a blu-ray release.
the studio and director obviously had other priorities in mind, perhaps the concerns of a director whose movies have not been released for the better part of a decade. cameron was devoting all his time and focus to the production of avatar 2 and aliens: rise of the covenant, with no release dates announced so far.
still, one of foxs sources had told us back in 2016 that both films would arrive on home media. and camerons other film company, lightstorm, sent out a press release to promote the distributor of the abyss premiere in berlin this week. it never contained the statement that we were hoping to hear – an announcement about a blu-ray release of the film.
this is not to say that the films will never come to blu-ray, it just means that if fox and lightstorm are still in talks over this, they certainly have not achieved that aim yet. however, i do get the feeling that fox and camerons other company to get this done is 20th century fox home entertainment.
