David Brubeck

David Cecil Brubeck (November 1, 1920 – December 1, 2012) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and bandleader. He was one of the most influential piano soloists in jazz history, and one of the most recorded jazz musicians of his generation.
Brubeck composed and performed a great variety of music and styles, and was also a noted and influential teacher and author. Originally from an Eastern European Jewish background, Brubeck attended the University of Minnesota for both music and law. At the suggestion of his mentors, Brubeck and his roommate (and future pianist) Paul Desmond chose to pursue music, and they both performed in high school and college groups.
After returning from military service in World War II, Brubeck and Desmond formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which quickly established themselves as one of the most important and influential jazz groups of the 1950s. The group released many hits, including “Take Five”, “Blue Rondo à la Turk”, “Blue Rondo à la Turk” and “I’ll Get By”. In addition, the quartet released several albums of their music during a career of over 25 years and charted dozens of Billboard Top 40 hits. In addition, Brubeck composed and performed a great variety of music and styles, and was also a noted and influential teacher and author.
Brubeck was born on November 1, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to a musical family. His father, Reginald, was a piano teacher; his mother was Sadie (née Lapp). During his childhood, Brubeck played violin, clarinet, piano, and drums, which he learned from listening to his parents’ collection of records. He attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, receiving undergraduate and graduate degrees in music, and then returned home to study law. While in college he joined the Twin City Jazz Co-ops, a group that also included Paul Desmond. They traveled and played together for more than five years during and after World War II. After his discharge from the US Army, Brubeck was employed as a sergeant in the Supply Department of the US Navy, serving as piano instructor at the Navy School of Music in Minneapolis.
