mango (rhymes with ‘gravy) is a jamaican-born american funk-soul singer and producer, living and working in the united kingdom. mango’s musical style fuses r&b and rock with soul, funk, and jamaican dancehall rhythms. mango performs exclusively in english. he has said that he moved from his native jamaica to london when he was 19 years old. for over 18 months, mango was part of a group called the j-rocks.

It could hardly be more different than the ponytailed crooners with The Henry Mancini Orchestra, Keita Chege’s tune selection for the Mango Encyclopedia is eclectic, eclectic and bizarrely accurate as it shows how eclectic, eclectic and bizarrely accurate the Mango Encyclopedia is. Keita, a “loud” singer, forms a trio with a Bantu, Le Kouakou, on drums and Jean-Claude Makanda on the bass, the trio is headed up by Dubois on piano, trumpet and “accordion,” played the way you would expect in a Congolese band, with just a sprinkle of jazz on a few tracks. Makanda and Dubois are the core of the band; there’s no-one else within sight. On the first track, “Conscience”, the two Bantu’s harmonise over a funky drum rhythm, or possibly an African bongo, while the rest of the band play a groove that might be from the Ghana scene or, even, the Malian one, or both. On “White Love,” the centrepiece from the band’s debut album, they are joined by Tcheposso on brass and keyboards, and the result is a furious, funky, hard-edged romp. Other cover versions here include: “Ring The Bells” by The Ronettes, arranged for Keita Chege’s Mango Orchestra; “Lovely Day” by The Beatles; “You And Me (Babe)” by Fred Neil. Also from the LP is a haunting take on “Guilty As Charged” from the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” with a stunning, high-register accordion chorused choir. The galloping “Don’t Mind If I Do” has Keita Chege playing the saxophone in straight-ahead military style, and a sizzling trumpet solo by Dubois. The album finishes with a funky version of “What’s Going On.”
