we’ve also included a comparison of wqhd 2560 x 1440 to full hd 1920 x 1080. when we first saw the wqhd displays they were a little odd to look at, but once they’ve been calibrated the oddities go away. the wqhd screens are considerably wider, with the extra space being employed much better. that said they’re not much taller either, which is a little bit of a letdown. the most obvious difference between the two resolution is that wqhd can support much more colours, with 2560 x 1440 (wqhd) supporting over 1.07 billion colours and full hd 1920 x 1080 supporting just over 8.3 million. that’s a much larger colour space (the difference between what’s possible on a tv and what’s possible on the pc monitor). we prefer the lower resolution simply because of the colours you can get on a pc monitor. also, a lot of the quality setting that you can apply with the wqhd monitors are going to be higher quality anyway. so it’s not as if you’re sacrificing quality when you go to wqhd.

as you can see this is a very wide monitor, which is certainly not for everyone. the bezels are not as thin as the asus rog swift pg278q which looks much more slender, but it does feel nice and wide. it’s certainly not an ‘eye-straining’ aspect ratio like the 1080p full hd 21:9 monitor that we’ve reviewed previously. the reason for the extra width is to make sure that you dont lose too much of the edge on the left and right of the screen. this ensures that you can see what is going on in those areas of the desktop, which is important in a lot of games. that said, the extra width of this display is also very good for how large you are. the extra space is very useful.

having said that, these monitors are still relatively expensive and at $4000+ for some of them, you’re not going to be looking at your 27″ ‘normal’ display all day. however, they are still very good products for a few reasons. firstly, these monitors have been designed by samsung specifically for gamers. in fact there is some evidence that these monitors are so good for gaming that many of the games are only available in wqhd (or even qhd!). secondly, many of these models have a freesync 2.0 (or more) technology that will give you a near seamless experience in all cases without the need to buy a specific graphics card. finally, they are also cheaper than a full wqhd (or qhd) monitor, and so you’re going to gain a lot more screen real estate for a little more money.
in other words, at the moment if you’re not making huge investments in your computer, you’re probably better off with a standard 1920 x 1080 full hd monitor. but if you have the extra cash, it’s certainly worth looking at these 21:9 or even wqhd (or qhd) monitors. and if you’re looking for a specific gaming or multimedia solution, you might be able to find a bargain.
even though the majority of movies are in the full hd resolution, ultra wide monitors are not a new thing. the first 21:9 widescreen monitors were produced in 1997 by the japanese company, nec. their first models were based on 1280 x 800 and the first models were very limited – they were very expensive and only available in japan. since then though, there have been many more options and the ultra wide format is now a mainstream thing. like many other 21:9 aspect ratio monitors, the ones reviewed in this article are based on 2560 x 1440 resolution.
